How to choose a linear guideways: criteria and characteristics

By wsadmin

Linear guideways play an essential role in many industrial and engineering applications. These devices enable precise, low-friction linear motions, making them indispensable in applications such as robotics, industrial automation and machine tools. Among the various manufacturers, Hiwin linear guideways are particularly renowned for their quality and reliability. But how can you choose the most suitable one? Here are some key criteria and features to consider.

1. Identification of the type of guideway according to the application

It is essential to choose the most suitable model for the applications needed and to identify the most suitable type of guideway accordingly:

HG/CG Series

Grinding machines, milling machines, drills, lathes, machining centres, woodworking machines, packaging

EG Series

Automatic machines, semiconductor equipment, precision measuring instruments

WE Series

Single axle with high torque load

MG Series

Miniature devices, semiconductor equipment, medical equipment.

RG Series

Machining centres, injection moulding machines, high rigidity machines and systems, deforming machines.

2. Load capacity, rigidity and durability

One of the key criteria when selecting a linear guideway is the load capacity. It is essential to select a guideway that can adequately support static and dynamic loads according to weight and type of application. It is important to refer to the calculation examples to determine the maximum load and to check that the static safety factor of the selected guideway is higher than the values given in the reference tables. The rigidity must also be assessed by calculating the deformation using the values given in the tables and, if necessary, opt for a higher preload and a larger linear guideway to increase rigidity. Hiwin guideways offer a wide range of solutions, from lightweight versions for precision applications to those designed to handle heavy loads in industrial environments.

The service life of a linear guideway is defined as the total distance travelled until signs of wear and fatigue occur on the surface of the raceway or rolling elements; this depends not only on the load, but also on operating factors such as speed, duty cycles and lubrication.

Hiwin uses advanced surface treatment technologies to improve wear resistance and extend the product life.

3. Precision and smoothness

Precision is a crucial factor, especially in applications that require controlled movements with minimal tolerances. When assessing accuracy, it is important to consider aspects such as backlash, repeatability and parallelism of motion. A linear guideway system that guarantees the level of precision required for the specific application must be selected, whether it is high-precision machining or standard linear motion.

Hiwin offers linear guideways with different degrees of precision to meet the needs of sectors such as medical, electronics and precision automation.

Smoothness directly affects the quality of motion. Hiwin uses recirculating ball or roller systems to ensure minimal friction and optimum smoothness, even at high speeds.

4. Materials and corrosion resistance

The choice of materials is another aspect to consider. Hiwin guideways are available in a variety of materials, including stainless steel and anti-corrosion treatments, to withstand harsh environmental conditions or applications in humid and corrosive environments. When evaluating different material and coating options, it is important to consider elements such as contact stress, friction, wear and compatibility with connected components. It is also important to consider the context where the guideway will be used to ensure long life and consistent performance.

5. Dimensions and assembly

The size of the guideway and the associated carriage must be compatible with the design. If the guideway system is applied in combination with a ball screw, its size must be proportional to the size (diameter) of the screw. A good fastening system is essential to ensure stability and precision.

Hiwin offers a wide range of formats with customised lengths, allowing to choose the most suitable configuration.

6. Lubrication system

Lubrication is essential for the proper operation of linear guideways. For example, in applications where maintenance access is limited, the use of a maintenance-free linear guideway system can reduce the need for regular servicing as well as the risk of unplanned downtime.

Hiwin offers solutions with integrated lubrication systems or specific accessories that reduce the need for frequent maintenance.

Choosing a linear guideway requires careful analysis of criteria such as type of application, load capacity, precision, materials, dimensions and lubrication.

Hiwin linear guideways are a reliable choice for achieving high performance, quality and customisation. Investing in the right guideway not only improves system efficiency, but also reduces long-term maintenance costs.
