Varvel gearbox maintenance guide

By wsadmin

Varvel gearboxes are designed for high reliability and long service life. However, proper maintenance and lubrication are essential to preserve their efficiency over time. The following guidelines will help you maintaining optimum performance and preventing sudden failures. These devices deliver reliable performance with minimal maintenance.

First stage of use

Before exposing the gearbox to full load, a run-in period of 2-3 hours at reduced load is recommended. This allows the internal parts to adapt to each other, reduces initial wear and improves system performance.

Gearbox lubrication and oil life

Varvel gearboxes are shipped already filled with a long-life synthetic lubricant. This oil guarantees an average service life of 15,000 hours without the need for topping up or extraordinary maintenance.

Varvel gearbox maintenance schedule

To ensure optimal operation, regular maintenance should be carried out according to the following schedule:

Every 3000 hours or every 6 months

Check the condition of the oil seals and replace them if they are excessively worn.

Every 500 hours or every month

Carry out a visual inspection of the oil seals for lubricant leaks.

Every 5 years

Replace synthetic oil to ensure maximum system efficiency.

For gearboxes operating in intermittent mode, it is recommended to check the oil level at least once a month. If operation is continuous, the frequency of checks should be increased to prevent possible lubrication problems.

Oil Change Procedure

The oil change must be carried out when the gearbox is hot to facilitate the draining of the old lubricant. Follow these steps:

1. Place a suitable container under the drain plug.

2. Remove the filler and drain plugs, allowing the used oil to drain completely.

3. Replace the plug seals and thoroughly clean the internal parts with suitable liquids and the magnet, if any.

4. Screw the drain plug back on and reinstall the gearbox in its operating position.

5. Fill the gearbox with new oil up to the level indicated in the plug or visual level, then screw in the filler plug.

After the lubricant change, it is important to check the condition of the used oil. If it is particularly dirty or has metal debris, the subsequent oil changes should be moved up or the presence of possible functional problems should be inspected. Used oil must be disposed of in accordance with current regulations: it must be handed over to authorised disposal companies, with the appropriate forms issued to ensure correct and environmentally friendly handling.

Important precautions

  • Do not mix oils of different viscosities or brands.
  • Do not combine synthetic oils with mineral oils.
  • After restarting, check the sealing rings periodically for lubricant leakage.

By following these simple guidelines, it will be possible to keep Varvel gearboxes in optimal condition and ensure reliable, long-lasting operation.
